The short answer
A retaining wall is a structure that holds back soil to level a slope, prevent erosion, or carve out usable space on a graded lot. Stepping Stone Hardscape builds segmental (block) and natural-stone retaining walls across Southern Maryland, using compacted base, drainage stone, and geogrid soil reinforcement where the height requires it, so the wall stays plumb under load.
A retaining wall is doing structural work every day — it holds back tons of soil and water pressure. Built right, it disappears into the landscape. Built wrong, it bulges and topples within a few years.
We build walls that account for what you can’t see: a compacted footing, clean drainage stone and pipe behind the face, and geogrid reinforcement tied back into the hillside on taller walls. The result carries the load and drains, so hydrostatic pressure never builds up behind it.
Why homeowners choose it
- Turns an unusable slope into flat, terraced, plantable yard
- Stops erosion and directs water away from foundations
- Geogrid reinforcement and drainage designed to the wall height
- Doubles as seat walls, raised beds, and planter borders

What we install
- Belgard / EP Henry segmental wall block (Diamond, Anchor)
- Natural stone and boulder walls
- Tiered / terraced walls for steep grades
- Drainage stone, filter fabric, and perforated pipe
- Integrated steps, columns, and lighting
Retaining Walls: your questions, answered
In St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Charles County, walls over roughly 4 feet in exposed height (or walls carrying a surcharge like a driveway) typically require an engineered design and a permit. We flag this during the estimate and coordinate the drawings when it applies.
Almost always from water and a missing base. Without drainage stone and pipe, water builds up behind the wall and pushes it over; without a compacted footing, the wall settles. We build in both, plus geogrid on taller walls, so the load is carried and the water has somewhere to go.
Plenty. Short walls make excellent seat walls around a patio or fire pit, raised planting beds, and defined borders. Many of our projects use the same block for both structural and decorative walls so everything ties together.
