Outdoor Kitchens & Fireplaces

The short answer

An outdoor kitchen or fireplace is a permanent, masonry-built cooking or gathering feature — grill islands, counters, pizza ovens, fireplaces, and fire pits — constructed on a hardscape foundation. Stepping Stone Hardscape designs and builds these outdoor living features across St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Charles County, integrating gas, power, and drainage so the space works as well as it looks.

The best outdoor rooms have a reason to stay outside — a fire to gather around and a place to cook and serve. These features anchor a patio and extend the season well into fall.

We build kitchens and fireplaces as permanent masonry structures, not kits dropped on the grass. That means a proper footing, block-and-veneer or manufactured-stone construction, and the gas, electrical, and drainage roughed in before the finish goes on.

Why homeowners choose it

  • Built-in grills, counters, storage, and pizza ovens
  • Wood-burning and gas fireplaces and fire pits
  • Stone veneer finishes that match your patio and walls
  • Gas, power, and lighting integrated during the build

Outdoor Kitchens & Fireplaces: your questions, answered

Only if you want natural gas or propane appliances. Many clients choose gas for convenience, but wood-burning fire pits and charcoal grills need no line. We coordinate licensed gas and electrical rough-ins during the build when they’re part of the plan.

A fire pit is an open, 360-degree feature you gather around — informal and lower cost. A fireplace is a vertical masonry structure with a chimney that throws heat in one direction and makes a dramatic focal point. We build both; the right choice depends on your space and budget.

Yes. Grills and fire features work year-round, and a fireplace or fire pit is what makes a patio usable on cold Southern Maryland evenings. We can also plan windbreak walls and overhead cover to extend the season.
